Application Deadline for Summer Program: 11/01 (November 1st) (Contact: Dr. P. D. Cottle)
The Fox Lab has funding from the National Science Foundation to support teams of one professor and one student from each of three four-year colleges for research involving the Fox Lab’s Super Enge Split Pole Spectrograph. Each team will perform an experiment (in collaboration with Fox Lab faculty and students) using the spectrograph during the month of June, and then the student (with assistance from FSU faculty and students) will analyze the data. Each experiment will produce a publication in a peer-reviewed journal. The funding available for each team includes a $5,000 stipend for the student, a $5,000 stipend for the professor, and $5,000 to cover expenses for the student and professor. Students will stay in university housing, and that expense will be paid for out of the $5,000 travel budget. The rest of the travel budget will be available to reimburse expenses like hotel for the professor and plane fare or personal car mileage for the professor and/or student.
The Fox Lab is asking professors from four-year schools that are interested in participating in the REU next summer to apply by proposing an experiment that would take five days or less to run on the spectrograph. The laboratory also requires a commitment on the part of the professor to participate in the experiment in person. It is not yet necessary to designate the student who would be participating.
For details about the spectrograph parameters and beam currents available at the Fox Laboratory, contact Paul Cottle. In addition, the lab will have to investigate whether the target needed for the proposed experiment can be obtained.
Professors interested in participating in the REU should send their proposals to Paul Cottle by November 1, i.e., the November of the year before the REU takes places during the next year's summer months. Professors will be notified about the results by December 1.
