During the recent switch from the Spieker chamber to the original Yale chamber, there was some basic confusion about how to re-install the Yale chamber. Most involved agreed that it would be useful to develop a checklist for chamber swaps.

Spieker Chamber -> Yale Chamber

The following notes are lessons learned (or more accurately re-learned) during the recent chamber swap.

  1. The overhead gantry cranes can not center over the target chamber. In the past we have slung a 1 ton chain hoist over the gantry crane bridge as close to center as possible. It is not perfect and two people are required to control the chamber during hoisting operations.
  2. The clamp ring bolts that hold the chamber down to the trunnion at the bottom are socket head cap screws, metric M8 - 1.25 x 25mm.
  3. A guide screw was installed that locates the chamber in the correct orientation w.r.t. the trunnion. This screw should be raised and used to guide the Yale chamber into location. I believe the pin enters the section of the chamber that rotates w/ the trunnion, but this should be confirmed before leaving the pin engaged.
  4. There are 4 socket head cap screws, 5/8" - 11 x 2" that mount from the under side that fix the stationary portion of the chamber w/ the inner trunnion carriage. This is tied down w/ the tie rod. Omission of these bolts will allow the beam inlet pipe to shear the beamline apart on rotation.
  5. The sliding seal had to be exercised ~ 30 degrees before it would seal after storage.
  6. If the cryo is not installed, the bottom of the chamber is sealed with a nominal 6" (11" O.D.) standard ASA flange and a 2-266 o-ring. This is bolted with hex head cap screws, 3/4" - 10 x 1.5".

Additionally, a cart needs to be created that will hold either of the offline chambers and all of the associated parts and allow safe transport AND storage.
